Top 15 OpenCart modules every store needs

The essential OpenCart module list for a new or running store: SEO, checkout, integrations, analytics. How paid and free versions differ.

Module categories and priorities

Modules split into four groups by importance:

  • Critical (everyone needs them): SEO, checkout, payments, delivery, analytics
  • Important (90% of stores): backups, performance, email notifications, spam protection
  • Optional (as needed): marketplaces, CRM, accounting, campaigns, loyalty
  • Useful at scale: caching, CDN, multi-warehouse, multi-language

Critical: SEO Pack

What it does: generates templated meta tags for all products and categories, builds sitemap.xml automatically, adds schema.org product markup, and controls canonical URLs.

Without it your products index poorly, rankings suffer, and ad spend never gets organic support.

Free: the basic SEO Pack builds. Paid: SEO Pack PRO around $50 with auto-generation, JSON-LD and breadcrumbs.

The alternative — writing everything by hand per product — is only realistic under about 30 products.

Critical: Quick Checkout (one-step)

What it does: replaces the default five-step OpenCart checkout with a single page showing cart, shipping fields, payment and a confirm button.

Effect: conversion to paid order rises 25-40%. Fewer steps means fewer chances to change your mind.

Best options: D-Quick Checkout ($40), Simple Checkout ($30), or the free community OneStep Checkout with reduced functionality.

Configure it to show only what matters: name, phone, delivery method. Strip every other required field.

Critical: carrier integration

What it does: connects the carrier API — Nova Poshta dominates Ukrainian delivery. The customer picks a city and branch or parcel locker inside the form, shipping cost calculates automatically, and one admin click generates the waybill.

The saving: 1-3 minutes per parcel versus manual waybill creation — 1-3 hours a day at 50 orders.

Free modules exist on GitHub, but paid ones (around $50) track the newer API, come with real support, and integrate properly with the admin panel.

Critical: payment gateways

Ukrainian stores typically run LiqPay, Fondy, Wayforpay, Portmone or Monobank acquiring.

LiqPay: free module, 2.5-2.7% per transaction. Reliable, though some customers hesitate at the bank-branded window.

Fondy: 2.5-2.95%. Supports more payment methods including Apple Pay and Google Pay, and converts better.

Wayforpay: 2.5-3% with a good interface, though Monobank integration is occasionally rough.

We recommend at least two gateways: one for broad reach and one covering Apple/Google Pay.

Critical: Google Analytics 4 and Tag Manager

Without analytics you are blind. GA4 captures the whole customer journey: source, pages viewed, exit point, purchase.

The Google Tag Manager module injects GTM across all pages and passes e-commerce events (view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, purchase). Free.

Everything else then rides on GTM: Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, Microsoft Clarity, Hotjar — no extra development.

Important: backups

OpenCart does not back itself up. If hosting fails, the database is compromised, or someone deletes a category, it is gone.

Backup Pro ($30) dumps database and files every N hours and can ship the archive to Google Drive, Dropbox or S3.

Free alternative: a cron script with mysqldump syncing to a backup server. One or two hours of developer time.

Important: form spam protection

Unprotected lead forms fill with bot spam. Within a week or two, 70-90% of submissions will be junk.

Simplest: Google reCAPTCHA v3, invisible with a 0-1 risk score. The module is free.

Alternatives: hCaptcha (European, no data to Google) or a honeypot field that only bots fill.

Important: triggered email notifications

Stock OpenCart sends only "order created". That is not enough.

An order email templates module adds: a welcome message to new customers, a payment reminder after N hours, a thank-you with a personal discount for the next order, and abandoned-cart reminders.

Effect: repeat purchases rise 20-30% and abandoned carts come back to life.

Integration with external services (eSputnik, SendPulse, Mailchimp) is a separate module at $30-100.

Optional: Rozetka and Prom marketplaces

If you plan to sell on marketplaces, you need catalog sync modules built on YML feeds.

Paid: ManyMarkets Pro ($80), Marketplace Integration ($60). Both drive several marketplaces from one interface.

Free YML generators exist, but you monitor feed correctness and fix moderation rejections yourself.

Optional: CRM integration

With three or more managers and 50+ orders a day, a CRM is not optional — KeyCRM, SalesDrive or Bitrix24.

Modules: KeyCRM Integration ($0-100), SalesDrive Bridge ($60), Bitrix24 Connector ($80).

Website orders drop into the pipeline automatically, and managers see who owns each one and which stage it has reached.

Useful: caching and performance

OpenCart Dynamic Cache ($40) caches pages for a 3-5× speedup, especially noticeable past 5,000 products.

Free route: server-side caching with Redis or Memcached plus PHP OPcache. Two to four hours of developer work.

Image lazy loading via a module or a small JS snippet — images load on scroll, so first paint arrives faster.

Frequently asked questions

What should we actually budget for modules?
Minimum $0 using free versions plus manual configuration — fine for a test store. A real working stack is $150-300 one-time for paid versions plus $20-50 a year for updates. Against $700-3,000 of development, that is small.
Are modules a one-time purchase?
Mostly yes — lifetime licences with 6-12 months of free updates. After that you either run without updates (works, but no new features or security fixes) or pay $5-20 a year.
What about licensed commercial modules?
Buy only from official marketplaces and certified developers. Never download pirated builds — they routinely carry malware and backdoors that steal from your customers.
Can we write our own modules?
Yes. OpenCart has a documented modular architecture (controller/model/view). A custom module for a specific job costs $300-1,500 over 1-3 weeks. Worth it when nothing off the shelf covers your logic.
What about module conflicts?
Occasionally two modules override the same OpenCart function. The fix is vQmod or OCMOD manifests describing how each patches the core. A competent developer resolves a conflict in 1-2 hours.
